What Does a Vacuum Filter Do?

First off, and what does a vacuum filter do?

Well, to put it simply, you’re pulling a lot of dirt out of the surface you are vacuuming. Once that dirt gets pulled up into the vacuum some of it will naturally fall into the bag or canister. However, most of it will stay in the turbulent air inside of the container. All of that air has to go somewhere, and most of it is going to go back into the air.

Without a filter all of the dirt from your floor just goes back into the air and then back onto the floor. In the meantime it’s really terrible for breathing and as well. Anyone with allergies can tell you how hard it is to breathe after vacuuming.

That’s where HEPA filters for vacuums come into play.

Most high to mid range vacuums will contain HEPA filters. This higher grade filter is designed specifically for people with asthma and allergies. It will filter out even the fine particles that could irritate these conditions. For people with breathing problems it is a godsend. For everyone else it is just a really good idea.

If you’re going to get a vacuum, why NOT get one with a HEPA filter so your vacuum goes that extra mile when cleaning.

That was my thought process.

Is It REALLY a HEPA Filter?

A true HEPA filter will be able to stop 99.97% of particles that are 0.3 microns or larger. Fortunately, there’s an easy way for you to tell the difference between a genuine HEPA filter and one that just claims to be.

True HEPA filters have a serial number and the test results that prove they perform to the standard printed on them.

If they do not have these two things they may it be marketed as head of filters but will not actually function to that standard. Open the box if you have to to make sure the filter you are purchasing is a genuine HEPA rated filter.

HEPA Filters for Your Vacuum

Fortunately, even if you cannot afford a fancy new vacuum there is a good chance you can upgrade yours. Do a quick search online for filters and see if the manufacturer or third party company has created a HEPA filter for your vacuum.

Unless your model is the cheapest one available chances are someone has made a better filter for it.

It is also important to find a source for filters before you purchase any new vacuum. They simply do not last forever and you will need to replace them to continue enjoying the benefits of the great new product.

In some cases, the filter that came with a vacuum may not be true HEPA quality but you still may be able to purchase a better one right away. That means that HEPA filters for vacuums are not just a product feature, they can be purchased as an accessory as well.

Installing a HEPA Filter

Make sure when installing your new filter that you follow the manufacturer directions. Improper installation could result in not getting a good seal for filter. That will allow dust to move around the sides of the filter and into the air in your home. Obviously, this is the exact opposite of what you want.

Take those few extra seconds and make sure everything is in its proper place. Your sinuses will thank you.

Again, there’s no point in vacuuming if the dirt will just get back onto your floor and into the air you breathe.

Choosing a HEPA Vacuum

Choosing a new vacuum is difficult. There are just too many choices on the market.

HEPA filters for vacuums are a necessary a filter for choosing the right model. If selecting a vacuum with a high quality filter will mean that you can spend less time cleaning and more time enjoying life, then by all means – DO IT! When I choose a vacuum with a HEPA filter I know I have chosen well and got the best all-around cleaning for my home.

Final Verdict? YES, a HEPA filter is TOTALLY worth it!
